Walter Hartwell White Sr., also known by his clandestine business name Heisenberg, is the main protagonist of Breaking Bad.
He was portrayed by Bryan Cranston.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous/Anti-Villainous: Some of Walt’s worst actions include letting Jane die of an overdose, poisoning Brock (a young boy) to manipulate Jesse, ordering the death of 10 prisoners, and killing Mike just because he called him out.
- Powerful/Skillful: Walt is a highly skilled chemist who is able cook insanely pure meth, and by the end of the series, ran the largest drug operation in the United States.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Walt’s goal is to cook crystal meth to make sure his family is financially secure after his death initially, and later simply to fulfill his own pride.
- Arrogant: Walt has various moments of being arrogant, the most famous being him putting Leaves of Grass in his bathroom, which leads to his downfall when Hank read it and deduced his identity as Heisenberg.
- Intelligent: Walt is extremely intelligent, as not only is he chemically skilled, but he is also able to manipulate people to ensure his goals are achieved.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: By the end of the series, Walt has become so depraved, he cares for nobody but his family, and to an extent, Jesse.
- Short-Tempered: Walt is notably unable to control his temper and can be incredibly rude, as shown by how he killed Mike in a fit of rage or more lightheartedly, when he threw that pizza onto the roof simply because Skyler wouldn’t allow him in the house.
- Tragic Past: Throughout his life, Walt has went through many moments that helped shape his current state as a ruthless drug lord.
- He lost his father at a young age, to the point the memory of his death remained a vivid spot in his mind.
- He ended up in a position that was unable to make the full use of his chemical talent, when he could have been a successful billionaire if he had not sold his Gray Matter shares to Elliott.
- At the start of the series, he is shown to be a complete loser, as his family wasn’t all that satisfied by him, his former students mocked him, and he worked nonstop as a car wash employee, which all play a massive role in why he became a crime lord so that he could feel proud of himself.
- Has Comedic Moments: He has many moments of being laughably evil, such as when he quit his job at the car wash, the scene where he punches a paper towel dispenser, and the aforementioned pizza incident.
- Is a Dark Lord: While he doesn’t corrupt people directly, Walt’s meth has noticeably been shown to corrupt people (including people who are already evil), ranging from inhaling it or fighting over its distribution.
