Ozai, mainly referred to his titles Fire Lord Ozai and the Phoenix King, is the main antagonist of Avatar: the Last Airbender.
He was voiced by Mark Hamill.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous: Ozai tried to burn down the Earth Kingdom after taking it over and kill everyone there and also shows himself to be a horrid father to Zuko, favoring Azula over him and later scarring, banishing, and dishonoring him after he refused to fight him in an Agni Kai.
- Powerful/Skillful: Ozai presides over an empire that spans the globe and is the most powerful firebender in the series.
- Power-Hungry: Ozai continues his father and grandfather's ambitions to conquer the entire world.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Ozai's goal is to become the absolute ruler of the world.
- Arrogant: Ozai is highly arrogant and confident in his firebending powers, even claiming to Aang he has all the power in the world.
- Intelligent: Ozai has a lot of intelligence, being able to run the Fire Nation excellently and is a masterful firebender.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: As his own wife says so, Ozai is a small person whose own heart lacks any space for anybody.
- Short-Tempered: Even in his youth, Ozai demonstrated a lot of wrath, which fueled his firebending powers.
- Is a Game Changer: He's a dead serious and frighteningly competent villain, physically and emotionally abused Zuko, permanently disfiguring his face with fire and banishing him for speaking up to him.
- Psychopathic: Ozai is a massive psychopath, lacking any compassion and morality, to the point he finds peace and kindness funny.
- Narcissistic: He is a massive narcissist and megalomaniac, and views himself as better than everyone.
- Has a Sinister Laugh: Ozai gives off a evil chuckle after Zuko suggests he should replace the current Fire Nation system with one of peace and kindness.
- Sadistic: Ozai finds massive joy in seeing people suffer.
- Freudian Excuse: While he is very far past it, some of Ozai's actions might stem from the fact that his father favored Iroh over him in his youth.
- Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: Ozai is a foil to both Aang and his son Zuko:
- While Aang is a freedom-lover who wants to liberate the world and bring peace to it, Ozai is a power-hungry and control desiring megalomaniac who wants to put the world under his grasp.
- Like Zuko, he was the less favored, over a more talented sibling, son of the Fire Lord, but while Zuko was extremely kind-hearted as a boy and had a lot of humanity, and grew up to lead the Fire Nation into an era of peace, Ozai never had that humanity and became ruthless and cold-hearted, plunging the Fire Nation (and by extent the whole world) into even more warfare.
- Bloodthirsty: Ozai doesn't hesitate on hurting innocents to get what he wants.
- Is a Game Changer: As the ruler of the Fire Nation in the series and the one who caused much of the events of the story, Ozai is easily one of the darkest and most ruthless villains to appear.
- Is a Secondary-Color Nemesis: Ozai has an orange aura and has black parts on his robe.
- Is a Dark Lord: Due to his actions, Ozai essentially created who Azula is now and pretty much caused much of her actions in the series and what Zuko used to be before his redemption.
- Has Black Air Force Energy: Ozai is dominative and aggressive and disregards traditional morality.
