“ | Do you know what I got Alex? I got my friends, I got the team. I don't get to be all "boo-hoo I'm sad my friend died", I'm gonna put a bullet in my head so the whole world feels sorry for me. Jesus, you wave that gun around like I give a shit. I don't, man. If I sell out Bryce or lie either way my life falls apart. I got no one else on my side. I can't run home, that team's my home. Going to playoffs, winning state, being an athlete? That's not about fun, for me it's about survival. It's all I got. It's everything. | „ |
~ Monty to Alex on the motivation for his crimes. |
Montgomery "Monty" de la Cruz is the secondary antagonist of the 2017 Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.
He is a friend of Bryce Walker who starts out as a simple bully in Season 1, but in Season 2, he becomes a lot more vicious and even deadly as he commits a lot of crimes to silence the people who participated in the Bakers vs. Liberty High trial. He's also the arch-rival of Tyler Down as well as the one who raped him and made him try to shoot up the school.
He was portrayed by Timothy Granaderos.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous/Anti-Villainous: He watched Bryce rape Hannah at a party and chose to do nothing about it (which made the latter go on to take her own life), tried to kill Clay with a car, mocked the Bakers about their daughter's suicide, tried to make Alex kill himself and infamously raped Tyler with a mop just for causing a baseball game to get cancelled, which pushed Tyler over the edge and almost made him go through with his plan to shoot up the school before Clay stopped him.
- Powerful/Skillful: While unintelligent, he makes up for it with his intimidation and fighting skills. Although not as heavy as Bryce, he is extensively vicious, exerting hurricane-rank force in any and every occasion of combat.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: His main goal is to defend Bryce and silence his victims, willing to go as far as killing witnesses to “silence” them.
- Arrogant: During his speech about "survival", he reveals a degree of arrogance.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He has a terrifying temper, rude personality and scary aura surrounding him.
- Short-Tempered: He throws fits regularly.
- Is a Game Changer: He's one of the darkest villains in the show next to Bryce and Marcus.
- Psychopathic: He lacks any empathy or remorse (even during his sympathetic moments in the third season) with his only humanising quality being his care for Bryce.
- Sadistic: He embraces the idea of hurting others.
- Freudian Excuse: He grew up with an extremely abusive father who beats him on a frequent basis and acts homophobic towards him.
- Bloodthirsty: Some of his crimes come across as downright deadly.
- Has Comedic Moments: His stupidity sometimes makes him appear like a joke, though all his crimes (especially his significantly brutal rape of Tyler) are played totally straight in-universe.
- Is a Dark Lord: He temporarily turned Tyler into a villain by assaulting and raping him with a mop, which physically and psychologically damaged Tyler so much that he nearly shot up the school. Even if he didn't go through with it due to being talked out of his plan by Clay, Monty would have been responsible for over 100 deaths via raping and traumatizing a teenager over the cancellation of a baseball game, and a large part of Season 3 focuses on Tyler trying to come out of his trauma that was inflicted upon him by Monty.
