Nothing anyone did to her was any different than what happens to every girl at every high school. She just wanted attention. And leaving those tapes... That's a f-cked up thing to do! No one deserves that.
~ Marcus to Clay regarding Hannah’s suicide and the nature of the tapes.

Marcus Cole is a major antagonist in the 2017 Netflix teen drama series 13 Reasons Why. He is the student body president of Liberty High and the sixth reason why Hannah Baker killed herself.

He was portrayed by Steven Silver.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous/Anti-Villainous: He tried to force Hannah to have sex with him in a public diner and mockingly called her "easy" when she pushed him away.
  • Powerful/Skillful: He is the student body president.
  • Power-Hungry: He only cares about his reputation and he will take any threat to him deathly seriously
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: He wants to become an influential black leader and uses Bryce Walker as his scapegoat to do so. He also wants to prevent his tape from being leaked.
  • Arrogant: He has an enormous ego and loves his public image.
  • Intelligent: While he is a Pathetic Pinhead like Monty, he actually has some intelligent feats like hanging out with Bryce to perceive his reputation and hiding his egotism beneath a faux affably evil façade.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Aside from possible care for his dad (which is unconfirmed), he has absolutely zero redeeming qualities and is one of the show's most evil characters.
  • Is a Game Changer: Him almost raping Hannah with a calm smile on his face darkens the mood a bit and is played dead straight. Even if he’s a butt monkey in Season 2 who is subjected to multiple humiliating moments, he is still taken dead seriously.
  • Psychopathic: He has no empathy for anybody but himself and shows zero remorse for causing Hannah’s suicide, even claiming she was just an attention whore.
  • Freudian Excuse: He is bullied online and is pushed by his father to be a good black leader and not another "racial stereotype".
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: He is a darker version of Tyler Down who, despite stalking Hannah and taking pictures of her without consent, still genuinely missed her, while Marcus is a horrible person who tried to rape Hannah and always viewed her as a slut even after knowing she committed suicide.
  • Has Comedic Moments: Him wearing a lit up sombrero and some of his pickup lines to Hannah are played for laughs before the reveal of his true nature, with him being taken fully seriously afterwards. Despite being a butt-monkey in the second season, he is still seen as a dangerous threat by the characters and narrative.
