“ | Ooh... What is this? What a gift! All this time I've protected the wishes not knowing... the power they yield! I feel as if I can do... anything. | „ |
~ Magnifico going mad with power upon realizing how much he can get absorbing wishes to himself. |
“ | There will be no wishing on stars ever again! In fact, there will be no more hope, no more dreams, and no escape. No chance to rise up! No one to tell any tales! No one to challenge me ever again! You... are... NOTHING! | „ |
~ Magnifico to Asha and his subjects. |
King Magnifico is the main antagonist of the 2023 Disney film Wish, which is the commemoration for the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney Studios. He is the former king of Rosas, the ex-husband of Queen Amaya and the master-turned-archenemy of Asha.
He was voiced by Chris Pine.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous: He partially breaks the spirits of his own people by getting his hands on their wishes and deliberately refusing to grant them, crushed Sakina's wish out of spite, enslaved Simon after tricking him into betraying his friends and used Star as a living battery to reduce the entire kingdom of Rosas to slaves who are kept in a neverending state of misery and despair.
- Powerful/Skillful: He is a highly experienced sorcerer.
- Power-Hungry: He only cares about perceiving his public image and will eliminate any threats to his reputation.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: His main goal is to continue absorbing the magic of all wishes.
- Arrogant: As he says himself, only he decides what everyone deserves.
- Intelligent: He is manipulative enough to turn Simon into his attack dog.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He poses a serious threat to the wellbeing of Asha and her family and friends.
- Short-Tempered: He has a hissy fit during his villain song.
- Laughably Evil: He is sometimes funny, but is still taken fully seriously in-universe.
- Psychopathic: The only person he cares about is himself.
- Narcissistic: He is a highly egotistical man and sees himself as better than others.
- Sadistic: He enjoyed seeing Sakina feel devastated after he destroyed her wish and those of three other people.
- Freudian Excuse: His family was murdered and his home was demolished when he was younger.
- Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: He is a foil to Asha who thinks people should achieve their dreams if they want to, whereas Magnifico clearly disagrees.
- Bloodthirsty: He was willing to plunge the entirety of Rosas' population into sadness just so that no one would stand up to him.
- Is a Game Changer: The movie is mostly lighthearted, but when Magnifico is onscreen, everything takes a toll.
- Has Black Air Force Energy: He does whatever he wants with no qualms.
