Judge Claude Frollo is the main antagonist of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He was voiced by the late Tony Jay.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous: Frollo has torched half of Paris in search of Esmeralda, most notably a miller's house with him and his family still inside.
  • Powerful/Skillful: As a judge, he has influence over the soldiers of Paris.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Frollo wants to wipe out the Romani population in Paris.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Frollo is pure evil, shows no remorse in harming/killing innocent people and is generally a prejudiced bigot.
  • Intelligent: Frollo has been consistently shown to be a master manipulator.
  • Short-Tempered: Though he rarely lashes out, Frollo is shown to be openly angry, especially when Quasimodo disobeys him and when he doesn't get his way.
  • Game Changer: The movie start off with a pleasant morning in Paris and a colorful puppeteer telling a story to children. Then it’s get little darker when the story flashes back to the Roma sneaking into Paris twenty years ago, but it isn’t until Frollo appears that things really south with him killing Quasimodo's mother and almost killing baby Quasi before Archdeacon stops him.
  • Psychopathic: He's often come off as petulant and throwing temper tantrums in the form of trying to burn all of Paris.
  • Sadistic: Frollo displays a sinister grin when he sees Esmeralda burning to death.
  • Has Incompetant Minions: Frollo's soldiers proved themselves to be unable to capture Esmeralda on their own.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: While Quasimodo sees Esmeralda as the kind-hearted person she is, Frollo delusionally perceives her as an evil witch.
