~ Juan Bolsa vowing revenge on Gus for being disloyal to the Cartel moments before he is killed by Mexican federals. |
Juan Bolsa is a supproting antagonist in the 2008 crime series Breaking Bad and a major antagonist in its 2015 prequel Better Call Saul. He is one of the co-founders of the Cartel who has a part to play in Gus becoming the hardened criminal mastermind he is today.
He was portrayed by Javier Gradeja.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous/Anti-Villainous: He forced Gus to stare into the eyes of Max's dead body, which ruined his life and corrupted him into a crime lord who only seeks revenge. He also tried to kill Saul Goodman by hiring the Colombian Gang to go after him, and this resulted in Saul's near-death experience if not for Mike endangering himself to rescue the lawyer. However, he really crosses the Moral Event Horizon when he orders the Cousins to brutally kill Tortuga by chopping off his head with a machete and placing it on a tortoise's shell before rigging it with a bomb, which eventually leads to Hank's squad of police agents being bombed (which caused 1 guy to die and 3 others to be severely injured).
- Powerful/Skillful: Being one of the 3 founders of the Cartel, he is shown to be a manipulative leader with numerous connections.
- Power-Hungry: He extends his best efforts to guarantee success in Eladio's schemes, showing that he has a lust for power to a degree.
- Arrogant: When Mexican federals raid his home, he brags to Gus about how his brother is a police chief and he will back him up against the assailants.
- Intelligent: He is a pretty smart antagonist, having several intelligent feats such as running dummy loads across the border to find out who made Hector undergo a stroke, manipulating Tortuga into following him to the back of a public bar and gifting him with a tortoise only to trick him into being executed by Marco and Leonel, playing a role in orchestrating the explosive turtle trap made for the DEA, finding out that Gus killed Leonel and intending to expose his disloyal to the Cartel and warning Hector to avoid insulting Eladio with a dead straight face.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: While he's not ruthless like Eladio or homicidal like Hector, Bolsa can be cold-blooded sometimes, especially where he punishes Tortuga for being a snitch by having him beheaded by Marco and Leonel and placing his head on a tortoise that had a bomb attached to its shell to kill the informants that Tortuga worked for.
- Laughably Evil: He is sometimes funny, such as awkwardly laughing when Eladio mocked Hector's disability.
- Narcissistic: In his final moments, he is revealed to have an excessively high opinion of himself merely because his brother works for the police.
- Bloodthirsty: He had no problem with tricking Tortuga into being assassinated by the Salamanca Twins and spitefully let him die with no reaction to show him what happens if anyone betrays the Cartel.
- Is a Dark Lord: He is partly to blame for the way Gus turned out in the present given he pinned him down to make him watch as Max slowly dies of a gunshot to the head by Hector.
