La familia es todo (Family is all).
~ Hector's lesson to the twins.
My advice? Stick to chicken.
~ Hector to Gus after killing his boyfriend Max.

Don Hector "Tio" Salamanca is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Don Eladio) of the crime drama series Breaking Bad and one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Howard Hamlin) of its prequel series Better Call Saul.

He is the patriarch of the Salamanca Family and a high-ranking member of The Cartel - serving as the grandfather of Joaquin Salamanca as well as the uncle of Tuco, Lalo, Marco and Leonel. He is also the business rival and sworn archenemy of Gustavo Fring, since he murdered the latter's boyfriend and business partner Maximino Arciniega on the orders of his boss Don Eladio, which in turn led to Gus seeking revenge against Hector and the Cartel to avenge Max's death as a result.

He was portrayed by the late Mark Margolis.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous/Anti-Villainous: Being an NPE Hate Sink, he has committed numerous crimes like abusing his nephews and teaching them to be killers, murdering Max under Eladio's orders and taunting Gus by having him look at his lover's corpse (even blaming him for Max's death despite it not being Gus' fault at all), shot a helper in the face and buried his body in the desert, and burned down a hotel after torturing its proprietor for disrespecting him. Even Mike Ehrmantraut, a calm, civil and reasonable man, is terrified of Hector for these reasons.
  • Powerful/Skillful: Before becoming a disabled man who spent the rest of his life in a nursing home, he was a drug kingpin who co-founded the cartel and served the Salamanca family's leader for years.
  • Power-Hungry: His breakdown before his stroke shows that he is an attention seeker due to him believing that his family being responsible for the expansion of Eladio's business, bringing up the many sacrifices they made (including a hacienda that Hector paid for).
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: He always wants to be better than Gus and strives to avenge his family members' deaths, even if it's at the cost of his own life.
  • Arrogant: He literally called himself the cartel.
  • Intelligent: He is a very smart character who managed to groom his nephews into his successors who would continue his legacy and manipulated Mike into thinking he's a good person only to then have Marco and Leonel threaten the life of his granddaughter Kaylee, a 3 year-old girl.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He is generally an unappealing person who scares/disgusts almost everyone in his presence and earns himself the hatred of numerous characters (especially Gus). He also has many cold-blooded moments like advising against working with South Americans due to them being "dirty people", calling Gus and Max "the butt brothers" to mock their romantic relationship and having a perverted moment where he intentionally drops a glass of water to stare at the butt of the nurse who had to clean it up.
  • Short-Tempered: He is mostly angry and lacks a smile.
  • Sadistic: He enjoyed every second of killing Max and even mockingly told Gus to "stick to chicken" while making him look at his best friend's corpse.
  • Freudian Excuse: He suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk or talk and was psychologically tortured by Gus about the deaths of his family members, with him showing genuine sadness when hearing that Tuco, Marco, Leonel and Joaquin had all died to the point where he even cried about it.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: One of his nephews is Tuco (an approved Pathetic Pinhead).
  • Bloodthirsty: He takes pleasure in hurting or killing people and adores crossing the Moral Event Horizon, revelling in all of his crimes without a shred of remorse.
  • Has Comedic Moments: He deliberately farted and shat himself during a DEA interrogation with Jesse and made a nurse say inappropriate words for his own amusement.
  • Is a Dark Lord: He helped Eladio turn Gus into a crime lord who only seeks revenge by assassinating the person he cared about the most.
