What Makes Him A Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous: Gruber leads the Volksfrei terrorist group to steal 640 million dollars from the Nakatomi Plaza, kills Mr. Takagi, Ellis and several others, and tries to blow up the hostages to fake his death.
- Powerful/Skillful: As the leader of the Volksfrei, he has several men and weaponry at his disposal and has a lot of charisma and skill with firearms.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Gruber's goal is to six-hundred and forty million dollars from the Nakatomi Plaza.
- Arrogant: While not truly arrogant, Hans is somewhat boastful about his education and business skills.
- Intelligent: Hans is highly intelligent, as he is able to orchestrate a near-perfect heist that only failed as a result of John's interference.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Gruber is willing to kill people without qualms, to the point he instantly jokes about Mr. Takagi's death after killing him.
- Laughably Evil: He has a dark sense of humor, which is played for some extent of comedy.
- Psychopathic: He completely lacks any empathy, as shown by how little empathy he gave Karl when Tony died.
- Has Incompetent Minions: While his minions aren't incompetent, they are easily defeated by an unarmed John McClane, while Hans himself tries to defeat him intelligently.
- Bloodthirsty: Kills Joseph Takagi for not telling him the code.
