Gary Smith is the main antagonist of the 2006 video game Bully.

He is a malicious but highly intelligent student, aiming to take over the student population of the private high school of Bullworth Academy. Smith feigns friendship with the hero Jimmy to use him as muscle and a scapegoat, but his reign of terror comes to an end when Hopkins realizes what kind of person he is, becoming his archenemy.

He was voiced by Peter Vack.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous: Gary orchestrates multiple commitments against Bullworth Academy, such as stealing and destroying Preppies' trophies, setting the gymnasium to the fire with several students inside of it, and inciting a massive riot which he made dozens of students hooliganize the school and fight each other.
  • Skillful: He is exceptionally skilled at manipulating people in order to reach his goals, winning all of the cliques (except Bullies) over his side to be superior at school and against Jimmy, and even persuading the principal Dr. Crabblesnitch into making him the Head Boy of school, tricking him into showing Gary as a model student while scapegoating Jimmy for all of the atrocities Gary has done.
  • Power-Hungry: He wants to take over Bullworth Academy and imagines himself ruling over a large empire, even stating that he is the one who runs Jimmy's world.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: He wants to become the Head Boy of Bullworth Academy to take over the school in a tyrannical manner, while making all of the cliques work for him.
  • Arrogant: He views himself superior to those around him, whom he considers weaker and dumber than him, only being puppets and pawns. He even considers having friends to be a weak action.
  • Intelligent: Despite his cocky attitude and delusions of grandeur, Gary is intelligent enough to manipulate everyone into hating Jimmy to the point where the latter gets expelled for something he didn't do.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Gary has no redeeming qualities at all and is generally a manipulative egotist, not caring about anyone around him.
  • Laughably Evil: He has some laughable moments, especially when bullying Pete Kowalski in the first chapter, while this does not detract from his heinousness.
  • Narcissistic: He considers himself the sole leader of Bullworth Academy, especially shown during the final showdown in which he declares himself as the winner and superior to everyone at the school, constanty admiring himself for his atrocities.
  • Sadistic: Gary takes enormous pleasure in watching Bullworth students and Townies fighting each other senselessly.
  • Freudian Excuse: While not justifying his actions and even he rejects it himself as a justification, he has a past of having unloving parents that were trapped in a failing marriage between a greedy crook and a promiscuous woman who are described as horrible greedy people (with even his father going to prison) and forced him on medication, then dumped him into Bullworth when he was old enough, which negatively contributed to his current personality.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: Some of his minions, such as Nerds, showcases some incompetent traits, such as getting easily defeated by Jimmy during the final showdown.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero: Whereas Jimmy wants to make Bullworth Academy a more peaceful school by stopping bullies and corrupt staff members, Gary wants to rule the school with an iron fist by manipulating people into hurting each other.
  • Bloodthirsty: He has no qualms about hurting people, provoking students into having war with each other and endangering multiple students with his atrocities in addition to attempting to murder Jimmy during the final showdown.
  • Is a Game Changer: Gary is taken seriously and distrusted by the students at Bullworth, and he darkens the game's comical tone as the story progresses, ultimately turning the school into a battlefield where everyone brutalize each other.
  • Is a Secondary-Color Nemesis: His Schutzstaffel Nazi officer costume in Halloween mainly consists of black color.
  • Is a Dark Lord: Not only he wants to rule the school, he also inspires the clique leaders to hooliganize the school, with particularly being Earnest Jones who considers himself and Gary unstoppable with his own intelligence and the latter's lack of morals.
  • Immature: During the final showdown, he constantly brags about himself and screams with the euphoria of victory, rejecting all of Jimmy's negotiating attempts and insult his mom just to provoke him into a fight where he attempts to kill Jimmy.
