Emperor Palpatine

Sheev Palpatine, better known as Darth Sidious and Emperor Palpatine, is the main antagonist of the Star Wars franchise.

He was portrayed by Ian McDiarmid.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous: Palpatine is the most heinous villain in Star Wars and engineered many atrocities across the series, with his most notable crimes being funding both sides of the Clone Wars, telling the clones to execute Order 66 and commit genocide on the Jedi, and lead Anakin's path to the dark side.
  • Powerful/Skillful: Palpatine is one of the most powerful Force users in the franchise, and leads an empire encompassing an entire galaxy.
  • Power-Hungry: Palpatine has an adoration with power, and desires to have as much of it as he possibly can. Some of his most iconic quotes even showcase this aspect of him to 11.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Palpatine's goal is to rule the entire galaxy and destroy the Jedi Order.
  • Arrogant: Palpatine has moments of being filled with hubris, with his fight with Windu showing it clearly.
  • Intelligent: Palpatine is a highly skilled master manipulator who can easily draw people under his thumb.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He lacks any care or loyalty toward anyone, from his master to his minions, and sees them as mere expendables for his goal.
  • Laughably Evil: While taken completely seriously in-universe, Palpatine is portrayed as extremely hammy to the point of spawning memes.
  • Psychopathic: Palpatine is a classic psychopath, who lacks empathy or care, to the point he is willing to sacrifice people by the billions for his plans.
  • Sadistic: Palpatine shows an immense amount of joy when trying to torture Luke to death with Force Lightning.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: While it is unknown if he directly hired them or not, the Empire's ranks are filled with many incompetents, with the Stormtroopers (due to their infamously bad aim) and Admiral Ozzel being shining examples.
  • Is a Game Changer: He singlehandedly caused much of the plot of Star Wars, and is shown to be one of the most brutally competent villains of all time.
  • Is a Dark Lord: Palpatine has been able to draw people to the dark side many times, with Anakin being the best example of this.
