Philip Wittebane, later known as Emperor Belos, is the main antagonist of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain[]

  • Villainous: He has manipulated most witches and demons, and attempted to destroy all of them.
  • Powerful/Skillful: He has learnt magic and consistently a powerful threat to the heroes.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: He wants to be hailed as a witch-hunting "hero".
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He does not hesitate to kill other people, including but not limited to Caleb Wittebane, his elder brother.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: He is considered as a foil to Luz Noceda, as they are both from the Human Realm who accidentally traveled to the Demon Realm, studied the Isles and its nature, and made their decision regarding their relationship with the witches and demons.
  • Is a Game Changer: He's altogether evil with almost no comedic traits, let alone redeeming qualities, and all humor in the show evaporates whenever he's on-screen.
  • Psychopathic: A deeply deranged man who will kill every witch and demon in the Boiling Isles just to justify his actions.
  • Sadistic: He takes great delight in killing Gravewalkers when they start to gain agency.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was an orphan with Caleb, who moved to Gravesfield in 1613 to fit in with witch hunting. Then Caleb fell in love with a witch named Evelyn and left his younger brother behind.
