Drake is the main antagonist of Don Bluth's 8th full-length animated feature film, The Pebble and the Penguin.

He is snide, sarcastic and cruel, and being the self proclaimed "best looking" penguin in the Rookery that he is, wants Marina as his mate. Despite wanting to get with Marina for The Full Moon Mating Ceremony, he doesn't want Marina because of her personality, but because of her looks and she’s the prettiest girl in the Rookery. Seeing how Marina only has eyes for Hubie, he throws Hubie into the sea in hopes of getting rid of him. He was voiced by Tim Curry.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous He's a major threat, not just to Hubie, but also Marina through several heinous acts: He throws Hubie into the seas of Antarctica with the intention of getting him killed by the Leopard Seal, sexually harrasses Marina, tries to force Marina to marry him against her will, and kidnaps her in an effort to take her to the Full Moon Mating Ceremony himself in vain to try and claim her as his mate. His worst act is trying to kill Hubie and Rocko by hurling a large stone at them despite the latter not having done anything to him.
  • Powerful/Skillful: Drake is well known for his strength. He serves as a really powerful foe to Hubie that he could easily overpower him. He is also able to lift and hurl large chunks of rocks because of how strong he is.
  • Power-Hungry: Wanting power over Marina, Drake is willing to browbeat, abuse, threaten, and kill anyone and anything that gets who serves as a threat to his conquest in claiming Marina as his mate, especially if it is Hubie.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: Drake wants to become Marina's mate for The Full Moon Mating Ceremony and tries to get rid of Hubie so he can have for himself.
  • Arrogant: Oh yes. He is smug, vain, and haughty. He believes he deserves what he desires, especially when it comes thinking he's entitled to have Marina because of her beauty.
  • Intelligent: Has been implied to have successfully gotten the entire rookery, save for Marina, to believe Hubie has died through deception. He also read Hubie's attacks during their first fight, which enabled Drake to temporarily knock Hubie out. As a follow up, he sees through Marina's attempts to reach Hubie’s unconscious body to help him recover and quickly recaptures her.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Very obvious. He severely mistreats Hubie for no good reason, simply so that he resents him because of his romantic relationship with Marina and thinks of him as a pathetic nerd. His ruthless demeanor makes Marina feel disgusted by him, and he forces himself onto her without an ounce of care for her personal boundaries.
  • Short-Tempered: Drake is very short-tempered, given that he snaps at his henchmen for laughing their heads off when they're just having fun.
  • Laughably Evil: While he is taken completely seriously in universe, Drake is not without his comedic moments, with his goofy facial expressions making his moments all the more comedic.
  • Psychopathic: Drake doesn't care who he hurts as long as he gets his way. He has little to no regard for those whose feelings he hurts.
  • Narcissistic: Drake admires his own reflection in an ice block mirror he has his henchmen hold to let him take a look.
  • Has a Sinister Laugh: Drake is shown to be laughing maniacally several times throughout the film.
  • Sadistic: He enjoys inflicting harm and pain on Hubie and Marina.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: Drake has idiotic henchmen that don't do much to assist him in his goals.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: Contrast with Hubie, Drake's traits are all what Marina despises in a soulmate. Hubie is generous, kind, thoughtful, and loving, while Drake is cruel, vile, manipulative, and self-centered. Hubie loves Marina for her sweet nature, while Drake only wants Marina out of lust.
  • Is a Game Changer: While he has his comedic moments, both the story narrative and characters still take him completely seriously. His presence darkens the story because of how vile and malicious he is.
  • Is a Secondary-Color Nemesis: Drake has purple eyeshadow, black feathers, and orange feet.
