Don Eladio Vuente is the overarching antagonist of the Breaking Bad franchise. He is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Hector Salamanca) of Breaking Bad and its prequel/sequel series Better Call Saul.
He is a notorious drug lord who was the founder and leader of The Cartel - serving as it's main Don who is the boss of various Cartel members such as Juan Bolsa and Hector Salamanca respectively. He is also the employer of Gus Fring, whom he first met back in 1989 and ended up becoming one of the few to know about his mysterious Chilean background.
He was portrayed by Steven Bauer.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous/Anti-Villainous: He ruins countless lives by dealing drugs to many different countries (corrupting hundreds of normal citizens into addicts who die from overdoses), has Max Arciniega killed in front of Gus and cruelly forces him to watch as his lover's corpse slowly dies and tried to kill Nacho which made the latter commit suicide to save his father from the cartel.
- Powerful/Skillful: As the founder of the cartel, he's the most powerful and influential character in the entire show.
- Power-Hungry: He doesn't give a fuck about anything but reputation, and because of that, he expects his associates to pay him a monthly tribute with each payment being expected to be huge.
- Arrogant: He knows how much Gus hates him for traumatizing him, yet he still goes on to say "business is business" before his death in the fourth season.
- Intelligent: While not a mastermind, he is intelligent as he managed to run the cartel for 30 years with no one daring to stand up to him.
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He's the most evil character in the show in terms of both personality and heinous actions (in addition to having no redeeming qualities), being a rude and power-hungry individual who enables many of the cartel members' atrocities, like Hector killing a good Samaritan, the Cousins beheading Tortuga and using his head to make a tortoise bomb that blew up a squad of DEA agents in front of Hank and Lalo doing everything he does in the sixth season of Better Call Saul.
- Short-Tempered: He has anger issues and will have anyone killed for disrespecting him in a heartbeat, regardless of how minor said disrespect may be.
- Psychopathic: He is remorseless and lacks empathy for those around him.
- Sadistic: After making Gus cry by having his boyfriend executed to show him who's boss, Eladio smiled chillingly at his despair and went on to threaten him to stay away from the cartel.
- Bloodthirsty: He brutally deals with any snitches related to the cartel, most notably the informants and agents who work for the DEA.
- Has Comedic Moments: While he's played dead seriously in-universe and is an irredeemably evil monster, he's not devoid of funny moments such as him mocking Hector's disability, him whining about the chubby size of a mascot representing him (which was a gift from Hector) and him comparing his car to a woman in front of a disturbed Lalo.
- Is a Dark Lord: Even though Gus wasn't really a good person as a child, all Eladio did was make him worse by killing Max and making him stare helplessly into the eyes of his dead body, which haunted Gus for the rest of his life and prevented him from ever moving on to a new romantic partner.
