Dio Brando, later known as DIO from Part 3 onwards, is the main antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.

He is voiced by Takehito Koyasu in Japanese and Patrick Seitz in English.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous: DIO is easily the most evil character in JoJo and is directly responsible for everything in Parts 1 and 3 and has his influence extended to all the parts.
  • Powerful/Skillful: Already a very powerful vampire, due to his lust for power, DIO acquires the powerful stand "The World" in part 3, which can stop time.
  • Power-Hungry: One of the most notable parts about DIO is his obsession with power and never stopping at anything to get it.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: DIO wants to take over the world and achieve a "heaven" for him and his minions.
  • Arrogant: DIO has been shown to be prideful, which ends up causing him to receive his just deserts multiple times.
  • Intelligent: DIO is a highly intelligent character who is able to make almost everybody like/respect him with manipulation.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: DIO is generally ruthless toward his enemies, as well as being willing to do anything to further his plans.
  • Short-Tempered: While mostly having a calm attitude, DIO can lose his temper sometimes, such as when he slapped Erina after she washed her mouth with mud after being kissed by him.
  • Is a Game Changer: When he joined the Joestar family, DIO decided to focus on ruining Jonathan's life.
  • Laughably Evil: While he is taken 100% seriously by the narrative of the story, DIO is often shown in an extremely hammy nature to the point he ends up being unintentionally funny.
  • Psychopathic: He cares about nobody at all, except for his late mother (which he subverted after becoming a vampire), and any bond he forms afterward (such as with Pucci) is completely fake.
  • Has a Sinister Laugh: DIO has been shown to laugh maniacally and hysterically at several points in the story.
  • Sadistic: DIO is a massive sadist who takes joy whenever seeing somebody he detests in pain and whenever he is shown to kill somebody.
  • Freudian Excuse: While Speedwagon claims DIO was born evil, it is very likely he wouldn't become the monster he is if not for his terrible childhood.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: DIO has several incompetent or at least dimwitted people among his underlings, such Hol Horse, Oingo and Boingo, and Alessi.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: DIO was written to be and can be considered a foil of Jonathan, as Jonathan is a noble hearted gentleman who shows great compassion, while DIO is a cold hearted vampire who doesn't care for anyone in his path to achieve his plans.
  • Bloodthirsty: DIO is extremely bloodthirsty due to his vampiric nature, and even without it, he shows a colossal amount of pleasure when hurting people.
  • Is a Secondary-Colored Nemesis: DIO's Part III outfit has green parts to it.
  • Calls Out Attacks: DIO calls out the following when using The World.
    • THE WORLD!!!/ZA WARUDO!!!
    • MUDA MUDA MUDA!!!
    • WRYYYYYYYYY!!!
    • TIME STOP!!!
