“ | Orel, I'll see YOU in my study. | „ |
~ Clay's catchphrase whenever Orel does something wrong. |
“ | Love is a very beautiful, very intense feeling for a startlingly short period of time. Before long you realize it gets in the way of the real important thing in life like going to sleep or being left alone. That's when love starts fading and lies kick in. | „ |
~ Clay talking to Orel about love. |
“ | WHY DO YOU QUIT WORKING ON ME?! She always fools me, Orel. "I'll make things better, dear! Drink me! Put me inside you! I'm great!" And she CHOKES ME, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER WHORE OUT THERE! They're all worthless, kid! Every woman! Don't let them get ya! All of them wanna get ya! They just grab you and PULL YOU INTO 'EM! And you're forced to STAY IN AND PULL OUT! STAY IN, PULL OUT! And they got ya! And they grip you by the right-where-it-counts, and then start squeezing things out! Things that are like WEIGHTS AROUND YOUR HEAD! YOU'RE STUCK THERE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WITH NOWHERE TO GO, AND NO ONE TO BE! | „ |
~ Clay's insecure breakdown in "Nature". |
Clayton "Clay" Middleinitial Puppington is the main antagonist of Moral Orel. He is the mayor of Moralton, the husband of Bloberta Puppington and the abusive father of Orel Puppington, the show's protagonist. He is an alcoholic and distrustful man who believes that abuse and love are the same things and constantly gives his son terrible advice as well as treating him cruelly.
He was voiced by Scott Adsit.
What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]
- Villainous/Anti-Villainous: He cheated on his wife multiple times while trapping her in an abusive marriage that lasted for several years, influenced his son Orel to become a serial rapist who impregnated every woman in the town due to frequently giving him bad advice and, in his most infamously evil act, shot Orel in the leg just for accidentally talking back and even blamed him for his own pain. Him shooting Orel would later cause the boy to lose faith in humanity and gain numerous corrupting factors in the third season.
- Powerful/Skillful: He is the mayor of Moralton, which puts him in a high position of power/authority.
- Power-Hungry: Due to the series not actually taking place in the 1950s, he bends the law to keep the system of racial discrimination instituted, showing he's more than willing to take advantage of his status as the mayor.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: His main goal is to mould Orel into someone as horrible as him and avoid letting his son be his own person.
- Arrogant: He bragged about shooting Orel just to spite the poor kid.
- Intelligent: He is a good gunman, nearly succeeded in his goal of corrupting Orel into a villain and, even as a child, he already had a sense of intellect as he feigned his death to get revenge on his mother for not showing him enough love, which led to her dying of a heart attack (though only unintentionally).
- Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: Initially a darkly funny and satirical man, he becomes a much more dangerous threat when he shoots Orel in the Season 2 finale and is taken fully seriously from that point onward.
- Short-Tempered: He loses his temper many times throughout the series, especially when he snaps at Orel just a millisecond before shooting him in the leg and breaking his will.
- Laughably Evil: He had numerous comedic moments in the first half of the series, such as his subversive explanations as to why Orel's actions are morally wrong and the running gag of his pants falling off due to taking off his belt to spank Orel.
- Narcissistic: He felt extremely proud of himself for causing Orel's loss of faith in humanity and even bullshitted an apology to him for shooting his leg just to be a sarcastic jackass.
- Sadistic: He gleefully said "Hate away, sister!" to Orel right after shooting his leg.
- Tragic Past: He was hated by his father for being coddled by his helicopter mother before accidentally causing her death, which led to his father becoming neglectful. Thinking that abuse is equivalent to love, Clay would often insult his dad to get him to treat him horribly, and this mentality stayed with him for the rest of his life. When he met Bloberta, he was introduced to alcoholism and got forced to marry her with questionable consent, resulting in their unhappy marriage that left him incapable of loving his children. Additionally, since he lives in a homophobic society, he has to suppress his sexuality (which is either gay or bisexual).
- Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: He is the bad counterpart of his own son, Orel, who genuinely wants to prove his loyalty to God while Clay just desires to bend the rules to his advantage.
- Is a Game Changer: Before Cecil was revealed to be a serial rapist, Clay was the one darkening the tone of the story due to his abuse of Orel.
- Is a Dark Lord: He is the reason why Orel has committed numerous atrocities, such as raping and impregnating most of the town's women, beating up Sal at a drug store and killing his pet dog Bartholomew.
- Has Black Air Force Energy: He enables racism in the corrupt town of Moralton, despite it being against God's religious morals and principles.
- Immature: Despite being a man, he is a very neglectful and lazy mayor.
