You've ruined everything! And now, it's time to die! Any last words, Gru?!
~ Bratt's breakdown before dance fighting Gru for the final time, and also his most famous quote.

Balthazar Bratt, better known by his surname Bratt, is the main antagonist of Illumination's 8th full-length feature film, Despicable Me 3, and a minor character in its sequel, Despicable Me 4.

He was once the star of a television show named Evil Bratt, right before it was cancelled due to his puberty. As such, becoming believing that he is the character he was on his own show and bent on getting revenge against Hollywood for ousting him, he plans to get rid of the iconic studio by making it float away into outer space.

He was voiced by Trey Parker, who also voiced Eric Cartman in South Park.

What Makes Him a Shonen Villain?[]

  • Villainous: He commits multiple villainous deeds in the film, such as stealing the world's largest diamond, trying to kill Gru and Dru, disguising himself as Lucy Wilde to kidnap Margo, Edith and Agnes as well as get back the diamond which Gru had managed to steal from him, and in his worst act, shooting bubblegum at everyone in the city of Hollywood with a giant robot and firing a laser on the city to try and send it into space out of revenge for his show Evil Bratt getting cancelled after he hit puberty.
  • Powerful/Skillful: He is a very capable and skilled supervillain, being able to commit particularly heinous crimes with only a giant weaponized robot, a weaponized keytar and bubblegum. He is also extremely manipulative and cunning as a talented actor, being able to dress up as an obese jewel inspector called "Monsieur Pompeux" to steal the diamond and disguise himself as Lucy Wilde to trick Gru, kidnap Gru's daughters and take the diamond back.
  • Power-Hungry: He seeks to gain world domination after destroying Hollywood out of revenge.
  • Pursues a Big-End Goal: He seeks to destroy Hollywood as revenge for his show Evil Bratt getting cancelled after he hit puberty.
  • Arrogant: He firmly believes that he is the fictional character Evil Bratt whom he played on TV, and thus arrogantly thinks that his ultimate plan to destroy Hollywood with a giant robot out of revenge and subsequently make the events from a very special episode of Evil Bratt a reality will succeed.
  • Intelligent: He is very intelligent, knowing how to turn his villainous gadgets from Evil Bratt into real things, such as inflatable bubblegum, his robot companion Clive, sentient Evil Bratt action figures, his giant robot from the episode where he makes Hollywood go to space, and more. He is also able to perfectly plan out his ultimate goal to destroy Hollywood by shooting bubblegum at it and sending it out into space and mimic events from Evil Bratt.
  • Cold-Hearted/Ruthless: He is an extremely ruthless and destructive individual who shows no mercy towards his enemies especially when he attempts to destroy Hollywood and mostly, he enjoys wreaking havoc and destruction as revenge for the cancellation of his Evil Bratt show and his fall from fame.
  • Short-Tempered: He gets irritated quickly at Clive's incompetence, the thought of his TV show getting cancelled and Hollywood rejecting him, and Gru ruining his plans.
  • Laughably Evil: He is constantly played for laughs and has many comedic moments, with his character and mannerisms being a parody of 80's culture.
  • Psychopathic: He sees no evil in his actions as an individual who has lost faith in the world, and he is also extremely vindictive and cruel, with his ultimate goal being to destroy Hollywood as revenge for cancelling Evil Bratt.
  • Narcissistic: He is a purely selfish megalomaniac with complete egotism who thinks almost only on himself and only on his actions.
  • Has a Sinister Laugh: He has an infamous and sinister yet goofy laugh, which is heard at different points of the film as he carries out his villainous actions.
  • Sadistic: He takes immense pleasure in attacking Hollywood in his giant robot and shooting bubblegum at it to send it out into space, not being concerned at all about the countless innocent lives that were endangered. He also casually puts the girls on the edge of a skyscraper and tells them to "enjoy the show", showing no care about the fact that they could potentially fall to their deaths.
  • Freudian Excuse: His TV show Evil Bratt was cancelled after he experienced an unexpected growth spurt, leading to Hollywood rejecting him and him falling from popularity as a result.
  • Has Incompetent Minions: His robot sidekick Clive acts incompetently at times, such as when he played "Take My Breath Away" instead of "Bad" when Bratt told him to play heist music. His Bratt Pack also fails to kill Gru and Dru twice.
  • Serves as a Foil to the Hero/Protagonist: He acts as a negative counterpart to Gru. Both men had strong aspirations in being villains themselves since they were younger, which would mean that they can become fearsome threats, as well. However, Gru would later have a change of heart after he made personal bonds with Margo, Edith and Agnes, leading him to the path of heroism. Bratt, on the other hand, still kept his sense of villainy for a long time just because his show got cancelled after he had hit puberty, refusing to move on from the past. Bratt serves as an example of what Gru would've become if he wasn't able to fully redeem himself in any way possible.
  • Bloodthirsty: He has no qualms about endangering thousands of innocents during his giant robot attack on Hollywood as he shoots weaponized bubblegum at everybody and later uses a laser fired from his robot to cut the city away from the surface so the bubblegum will lift it into outer space.
  • Is a Secondary-Color Nemesis: He wears a purple jumpsuit and black gloves as part of his attire, as well as shoes with black on the bottom.
  • Has Black Air Force Energy: He enjoys wreaking havoc and destruction to avenge himself on Hollywood for cancelling Evil Bratt.
  • Immature: Even in his adulthood, he refuses to grow up from his days as a child star and seeks to destroy Hollywood over cancelling his TV show many years ago.
